Ben Johnson

Brock University Graduate Student Senator, Nominee

Dear Badgers,

Thanks for voting!
My name is Ben, a PhD student in Applied Health Sciences. I served on Senate from 2020-2022. I’m looking to once again advocate for students in this crucial role. I already bring strong familiarity with Senate:

-Brock Senate, 2.5 years

Senate Committees Served:

-Student Appeals Board
-Teaching & Learning Policy Committee
-Teaching Innovations Working Group
-Information Technology & Infrastructure Committee
-Academic Review Committee
-Senate-adjunct Learning Management System Review Committee

I’ve studied/worked in 6 academic departments across Brock and will work collaboratively to ensure Brock duly listens to graduate student voices. Moreover, I volunteer in the Inclusive Education Research Lab and worked with the Vice-Provost, Teaching and Learning, as well as the Dean of Graduate Studies in Research Assistant positions.

One of many issues to address is graduate student mental health. While Brock has supports, they’re often compensatory rather than preventative. True prevention requires campus-wide collaboration.

Senate participation requires analytical thinking and a working knowledge of how the institution functions. I’ve demonstrated these skills through the following experiences in student leadership/advocacy/representation:

-GSA Program Assembly
-CHYS MA Student Reps
-Brock University Students’ Union (BUSU) Board of Directors, 2 years
-President’s Advisory Committee on Human Rights, Equity, & Decolonization (PACHRED), 4 years
-Brock Hiring Committees: Vice-President, Administration; Vice-President, Research; Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement; Vice-Provost, Teaching & Learning;
-Brock University Students’ Administrative Council (BUSAC) – 5 years
-Chair, BUSU Governance Committee and BUSU Appeals Committee
-HRE Campus Climate Survey Working Group
-Co-Chair, Gender & Sexual Violence Committee
